Are you wondering what healthy and easy apple recipe to try today?
Did you go apple picking or got a lot of fresh apples from the farmer’s market?
Apples are one of the most popular fruits in the world and you can find apples in the grocery store year round.
Different Varieties of Apples
The United States produces 2500 from the 7,500 varieties of apples that exist in the world.
The Red Delicious apples are the most popular variety in the United States and in the world.
Apples have a combination of sweet and tart flavor.
The sweetest apple variety is Fuji, with the highest sugar level. Fuji apples are crisp and juicy with a sweet flavor that resembles apple juice. They are easy to store and are available all year long.
If you are thinking about snacking, sweet apples such as Fuji, Red Delicious, or Gala are great options.
However when it comes to cooking and baking, varieties with a tart flavor may add a delicious touch to the recipe.
Granny Smith, the green apples, are available in store year round, have a tart flavor, a crisp consistency and are the healthiest apples to eat.
Granny Smith apples, are the most nutritious common apples because they have 13 times more phytonutrients than other varieties.
Some varieties of apples such as Fuji, Rome and Granny Smith have a thicker skin and you can store them for a couple of months in a cool and dark place.
Nutrition of Cooked vs Raw Apples
When cooking, baking, or microwaving fruits or veggies I always wonder how much of the nutrients are still in the food once they get to the table.
Raw apples with skin are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, fiber, and other nutrients.
Just wash the fruit thoroughly before eating to remove wax and pesticides.
Whenever possible it is recommended to eat apples with their skin. Peeling apples will lower the fiber and overall nutritious content of the fruit.
There are certain nutrients and vitamins that will decrease when heating or cooking such as vitamin C.
However, if you cook apples with skin they will retain most of the fiber and some of the phytochemicals.
Moreover, phytochemicals have many health benefits such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
In summary, eating apples raw with skin will provide the most health benefits. The second option is to cook or bake them with skin.
When you cook or bake peeled apples they only will retain some of the health benefits. However when you bake or cook them yourself you will be able to control the amount of sugar added.
If you use canned apples, they usually contain large amounts of sugar as a preservative.
How to Enjoy Raw Apples
Cut thin slices and dip in
- peanut or seed butter
- caramel
- chocolate
- cream cheese
- yoghurt
- honey
- melted ice cream
Eat slices of apple with slices of cheese.
Grate an apple or drop slices in a food processor and once you have a puree, drizzle with honey or cinnamon.
Add some apple cubes to your morning oatmeal or salads.
Blend them to make smoothies.
Easy Apple Recipes
The best apples for baking are the ones that keep chunks of fruit after baking and have a good tart-sweet flavor.
Choose apples that have a firm texture and a good bit of acidity.
Most recipes work best with tart and sweet apples such as Granny Smith.
However, varieties such as Jonagold, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Pink Lady will also work well.
If the apples are too soft, the fruit will turn into bland pockets of apple mush after spending some time in the oven.
