Did you ever feel the need to do something without a good reason and it ended up being an excellent decision?

That was your intuition guiding you toward a happy life.

When you trust your intuition, you allow your unconscious or primitive mind to give you clues to go where you want to go.

There are many leaders who attribute their success to having followed their intuition.

Quotes About Trusting Your Intuition

“Follow your intuition. That’s where true wisdom manifests itself.” Oprah Winfrey

“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.” Steve Jobs

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.” Albert Einstein

What Is Intuition?

Intuition is when we feel, understand, or conclude something without rational evidence.

We may meet someone and immediately like or dislike the person, without being able to explain why. As time goes by, we will most likely find rational evidence to support our initial impression.

Researchers concluded that our intuition is a psychological process based on past experiences and signals from our environment that go directly to our unconscious mind.

This means that we are making a decision at an unconscious level and we don’t even notice it.

Moreover, we perceive signals that provide positive or negative feelings that we experience in our body before being able to rationalize the information.

In our every day life we are encouraged to think, analyze, compare and contrast ignoring the signals of our intuition.

The most common way we experience our intuition is when we feel that something is wrong without being able to point out exactly what it is.

Everything looks perfect from the outside but we feel a tightening in our stomach or gut that makes us feel uneasy.

Trust Your Intuition When Making Decisions

We don’t always trust our intuition because we were raised to believe that having a positive or negative feeling is not enough information to make good decisions.

When making decisions for a happy life, trusting our intuition will provide additional important information that may guide us exactly where we want to go.

Elizabeth Gilbert in her book, Eat, Pray, Love, explains that for years she’d wished she could speak Italian. Even though she could not find any practical reason beside being a beautiful language.

Then, after her divorce she decided to go to Italy to learn the language and it was a great experience.

Steve Jobs was intrigued by the beauty of calligraphy. He decided to take a class and learn more about it even though there wasn’t any practical application for it in his life.

Then, 10 years later, when he was designing the Macintosh computer, he used this information to create multiple typefaces and proportionally spaced fonts.

What do you feel strongly about and keep ignoring or postponing because it does not seem to have a practical use?

Many times we have questions that don’t have an easy answer such as:

  • Will this person be a good partner?
  • Is it time to look for another job?
  • Should I start my own business?
  • What is the best career for me?

In addition to asking your friends, consulting with family, asking experts or researching on Google try to listen to your intuition.

How Can We Use Our Intuition As A Guide Toward A Happy Life?

Think about the times when you had the feeling of knowing something without understanding exactly where that information came from.

For instance, when you just meet a new person and love everything about her or him or you instantly dislike the person.

Many times we are so used to using our rational brain that we ignore our gut feelings or intuition.

Your intuition will make you do things that surprise you but that will end up being excellent decisions. The reason is that our unconscious mind picks up subtle information that is not evident to our rational mind.

Sometimes, when we do not trust our intuition and make wrong decision, we say to ourselves, I knew it didn’t work out.

Why Is It So Difficult To Trust Our Intuition?

When making decisions, we are always looking for evidence that supports our actions. The problem is that sometimes the clues are subtle and there isn’t actual evidence.

For instance a soon-to-be bride may sense the hesitation of the soon-to-be groom. She may want to cancel or postpone the wedding but everyone is busy planning, arranging, and preparing for the wedding so she decides to dismiss her intuition.

Many years later, after the relationship did not work out, she will remember that time and wish she had listened to her intuition.

Therefore, trusting your intuition can guide us toward a happy life.
